It’s been a busy week in the Utah state legislature. The Utah Future Farmers of America leadership paid a visit to the Capitol. Logan enjoyed the opportunity to meet with Utah college football coaches. He also got some training on how ticket revenues have dropped in recent years and how it’s affected local budgets, and had the opportunity to meet with the Utah Association of Conservation Districts.

Some of the legislation that’s generating interest this week includes...

  • HB0053 - a bill that would designate August 26, as Missing and Exploited Children’s Day in remembrance of Rachael Runyan; a three-year old who was kidnapped from a playground in Sunset that day in 1982. The crime was never solved.
  • HCR011 - a resolution expressing strong opposition to the Bears Ears National Monument designation and urges the President to rescind. The designation limits public access and economic growth from 1.35 million acres of land in San Juan County, an area 74% larger than the state of Rhode Island. This puts a heavy burden on people who live in the area, as well as the County of San Juan who relies on tax revenue that this land generates. We would like to see the Bears Ears National Monument minimized at the very least.

  • HJR003 – a call for a convention to discuss an amendment to the United States Constitution. This one has generated a lot of interest and debate. Since 1900, federal spending has steadily risen from around 3% of GDP to where it is today, about 21% of GDP. This resolution seeks to stop that trend by requiring the federal government to be fiscally responsible, place greater limits on the power of the federal government and put more power back in the hands of state governments, and impose term limits for congress.
  • HB132 – a bill that would require all new school buses to be equipped with safety belts at a cost of roughly $10,000 per bus.

Logan also presented HB0180 and HB181 mentioned last week to the House Natural Resources Committee. Both bills passed out favorably.
